Soldiers Burn Synagogues, Arrest Adherents In Nigeria’s Rivers State

Soldiers razed at least six synagogues in parts of local government areas in Rivers State, southern Nigeria.

Igbo Jewish adherents who escaped the attack confirmed that two were arrested by the soldiers who besieged Oyigbo, Etche, Iriebe and Eleme, killing at least 50 people after violence erupted in the areas as a result of a youth protest demanding an end to police brutality in Nigeria.

According to an eyewitness, the two people were arrested on Saturday at a synagogue in Iriebe Okpulor for “wearing Kippah & Magen”.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra – a group campaigning for the secession of the former eastern region of Nigeria, condemned the attack on synagogues and Jewish adherents.

Mr. Kanu, who requested their release, said that no harm should be done to those detained.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike last week ordered crackdowns on members of the separatist group – IPOB, and Jewish adherents in the region, which he called terrorists.

Aside from killings by Islamist Boko Haram terrorists and Fulani jihadist herdsmen, non-Muslims have been persecuted in Nigeria for decades. The attack on these Christians left thousands dead and many homeless.
