The Biden administration released its plans for funding that was originally earmarked by President Trump to build the border wall. On Friday, the administration said the $2 billion will instead go toward nearly 70 military projects in the U.S. and abroad.

The Biden administration announced the cancellation of border construction in April and have redirected the funds to be used for expanding small arms ranges, replacing service buildings and repairing a shipyard. Many Republicans have argued the switch violates federal budget law.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby explained the decision was based on operational priorities.

He went on to explain, “The Deputy Secretary today has approved a plan to use the $2.2 billion dollars in unobligated military construction funds that were previously made available for border barrier construction to restore funding in this fiscal year for 66 projects in 16 countries, 11 states and three territories.”

According to the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Homeland Security will use all legal authority to stop the wall’s expansion. This comes amid reports of a gap in the Arizona border wall, which has become a major hot spot for illegal immigration.
