House Oversight Republicans have sought answers answers from Washington D.C.’s mayor on the increase in violent crime in the city. Reports on Friday cited a letter sent by a group of lawmakers, who blasted Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) for letting the city deteriorate into crime rates not seen in almost 30 years.

The lawmakers accused Bowser of giving up on attempts to prevent the district from falling into a state of chaos. Washington has been expected to meet or exceed the 15-year high homicide rate set last year.

“As homelessness and violent crime have increased at an unchecked rate throughout the city, your administration seems to have given up trying to prevent the District from falling into a state of chaos,” the lawmakers wrote. “…By ignoring this growing issue, your administration is contributing to these people’s suffering, not alleviating it.”

This comes as Bowser released the city’s Fall Crime Prevention Initiative with police focusing on resources on five key neighborhoods.
