According to Nicole Hasso, a Republican congressional candidate from Iowa, critical race theory “wants to divide us.” In a recent interview, the conservative candidate emphasized a big part of her upcoming campaign focuses on education. She explained why she’s against teaching history with critical race theory.

Hasso, who is a black woman from Chicago, said the theory labels students as either victims or oppressors. She went on to call this notion a “Marxist theory.”

“I just truly believe that it’s a total lie for us to teach our kids that their victims or oppressors,” she stated. “I am a woman, a black woman, and I believe in justice. I believe in truth. I grew up in the south side of Chicago, so I’ve seen injustice all my life. And so, I will not sit on the sidelines. I don’t care what color you are. Justice is key to our country.”

Hasso further claimed the theory suggests the “American dream” only applies to those who are white, but she believes children need to learn they all have equal opportunities regardless of their race.
