Rusesabagina is famed for his depiction in the movie in which he is shown to have saved hundreds of lives during the 1994 genocide, which left some 800,000 dead. After years in exile, where he has become a fierce government critic, he appeared under arrest in Rwanda last month, after apparently being lured into a private jet under false pretences. In recent years Rusesabagina co-founded the Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD), an opposition party based abroad. While he has previously expressed support for the National Liberation Front (FLN), wh

Obaseki Promises to Return to APC

Image
The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, he declared that it would be “immoral” for him to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Obaseki won re-election in the last Saturday’s governorship election, which he contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He defeated APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu with a margin of 84,336 votes. Obaseki had dumped the APC for the PDP, when the ruling party disqualified him from participating in its primary election. There have since been concerns that having won the election on the platform of the PDP, he might return to the APC. But Obaseki, who met with Buhari alongside his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, said it would be immoral to do so. He described his trip to Aso Rock as a “thank you visit” to Buhari. Thanks

We've Not Been Allowed To Leave For Six Months, Workers At Indomie Cry Out For Help

Image
Workers at De United Foods Industries Limited, makers of Indomie noodles, have cried out for help over what they described as modern-day slavery and unfair labour practices meted out on them since March. The workers said cooks, drivers, nannies, stewards and other groups working for the largely Asian staff of the company, had not been allowed to return home to see their families by the management of the company under the guise of preventing the spread of COVID-19. The workers in a statement on Thursday said, “Ironically these bosses go out everyday including attending social functions while a few of them have even contracted the COVID-19 and infected the helpless domestic workers. The affected domestic workers are largely drawn from those living with their bosses around Ikoyi and Victoria Island parts of Lagos. “The Federation of Informal Workers Organisations of Nigeria, a network of working people under informal employment in Nigeria, was alerted about this development almost two mon

SKillings in Nigeria: Presidency attacks TY Danjuma, IPOB

Image
The Nigerian presidency has lambasted Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff. In a statement on Thursday, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, declared that Danjuma is not “a natural source of pressure for good governance”. His comment was in reaction to the letter by  UK lawmakers to the Commonwealth on the killings in Nigeria . The legislators disclosed that they met and spoke to Danjuma who told them that the country’s Armed Forces “are not neutral”, and that they “collude in ethnic cleansing”. Without mentioning the former General’s name, Shehu said during religious and ethnic riots in two states in 2001 and 2002, Nigerians “were violently and ruthlessly put down by the military under his authority”. This, he noted, caused the deaths “of thousands of lives and the displacement of some further 50,000 persons.” Shehu wrote: “It is important to stress to our partners and colleagues in the United Kingdom that not all who press them have the best interests of eit
