US Election: Scott Morrison rejects demands to call Trump to order

Australia Prime Minister, Scott Morrison has rejected calls for him to contact Donald Trump concerning the US election.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese had on Friday argued that Mr Morrison should contact Trump and inform him of Australia’s view that democratic processes must be respected.

Mr Albanese mentioned that it was in Australia’s interest that the US remained a stable and a credible democracy.

“The fact is that pressure needs to be bought by all people who believe in democratic processes.

“It’s important that the Prime Minister speaks out for democratic values at every opportunity,” Mr Albanese said.

Morrison described the calls for him to contact Trump directly as “divisive” and “unnecessary”.

He said the calls might seek to import the politics of the United States into Australia.

“I don’t know why you would want to do that. The US have their domestic politics. We will leave that to them,” he said.

Mr Morrison reiterated that he does not intend to be a participant in the United States’ political process, adding that he would wait for the result to be declared before commenting further.

“I just think trying to draw some link between the politics of the United States and trying to inject that in a partisan way into Australia is very divisive and very unnecessary,” Morrison said.

Trump had issued a warning to Joe Biden against making a “wrongful claim” to the seat of power.

The US president warned that he would soon begin legal proceedings with regards to the ongoing presidential election.
