Tommy Tuberville Floated as Ally for Rep. Brooks' Electoral College Challenge

Alabama GOP Rep. Mo Brooks’ aim to challenge Electoral College votes could get a needed Senate ally in Tommy Tuberville, AL.com reported Thursday.

Tuberville will be sworn in as the new Senator from Alabama on Jan. 3; Congress meets three days later to ratify the Electoral College’s decision that awarded the presidency to Joe Biden.

But if Tuberville becomes the sole senator to join Brooks in dissenting the votes, it would put him at immediate odds with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who warned fellow Republicans not to challenge the election results, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“I think that [Tuberville] and [GOP Texas Sen.] Ted Cruz are the two best candidates to do this,” Stan McDonald, Tuberville’s campaign chairman, said in a radio interview Tuesday. “I don’t know yet if or when he will do this. He’s very seriously considering it.”

But strategists told the news outlet Tuberville isn’t likely to buck McConnell.

“McConnell made it very clear that he won’t tolerate Republican senators speaking out against or challenging the Electoral College results,” Brent Buchanan, a GOP pollster told AL.com. “Tommy Tuberville is wise enough to know that first impressions matter, especially in Washington, so I doubt he bucks the leader of the Senate.”

Angi Stalnaker, another GOP strategist in Alabama, told the news outlet Tuberville’s role right now is “to stand in the Senate and do whatever he can” to help Georgia Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue win their special elections on Jan. 5.

Continuing to combat the election results might make for good politics, “but it’s not going to stop the liberal agenda of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” Stalnaker said, AL.com reported.

“So far, there is no senator to say ‘I would agree with Congressman Brooks,’” Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., who lost his reelection bid in November, told the news outlet.

“Even if there is one who does, it goes to each [chamber] separately and there is no way a Democratic majority does not count the votes of Biden electors. We’ve had Senator McConnell who (acknowledged) that Biden won the election. It’s tough to see how you turn around those votes.”
