Untold hardship of old retirees over unpaid pension

“I pray God that I will take these my two hands to take my pension because I really worked hard for the government. Even on Sundays, I went to work. Go to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in Lagos here, and ask of Mrs. Comfort Tinuade Williams, they can attest to this. I retired at Grade 7 Level 7 as a Senior Personnel officer.” These were the lamentations from the 87-year- old retiree, Mrs Comfort Tinuade Williams. Williams retired from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing on May 18, 1992, after spending 33 years in active service. She has not been paid any pension since May 2009 to date. When The Guardian visited the Lagos residence of ‘Mama Williams’ as she is fondly called, assisted to the living room in crutches by her caregiver; and supported to sit on a wheelchair, mama, who is a widow, broke down in torrential tears that gently cascaded down her wrinkled face. After regaining her composure, she carefully narrated her bitter experience thus:

Nigerian Consulate confirms murder of Biafran in South Africa

The Consul General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, Mr Godwin Adama, has confirmed the murder of another Nigerian, Mr Chikamso Ufordi, in South Africa. The  News Agency of Nigeria  gathered that the deceased was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants. Reacting to the development on the telephone on Tuesday, Adama, however, said he was yet to get the full report. According to him, although the incident is highly condemnable, incidences like that were common in South Africa, as it is a country with one of the highest crime rates in the world. “Murder statistics in South Africa indicate that over 50 people are violently murdered daily, about 20,330 in a year. “We are, however, investigating and equally following up police investigations on the matter to see the motive behind the attack. “We are however not in a hurry to conclude that it was xenophobic or criminal,” Adama said. Armed soldiers invade Osun police command headquarters

Some armed soldiers, on Monday, invaded the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo and broke the gate and caused panic in the area. According to some traders near the police headquarters, three of the soldiers had already entered the premises before the others were stopped at the gate. A trader, who identified herself simply as Nkechi, claimed that many of those with business in the area had to hurriedly close for the day for fear of being caught in the crossfire She told our correspondent that about 25 armed soldiers were seen at the gate of the command headquarters engaging the policemen manning the area in a hot argument around 1pm. “Later, a senior police officer with the name tag, Edward Ebuka, intervened and the soldiers left the area,” Nkechi stated. Mr Wale Ojo-Lanre, the Director General of Ekiti State Council for Arts and Culture, on Tuesday said that the state was committed to projecting and marketing pounded yam for international recognition and patronage.
