FG seeks Jonathan, Diezani’s foreign accounts’ details

Image
The Federal Government has asked a court in New York, the United States of America, to compel 10 foreign banks to release to it account details of former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Patience, and the then Minister of Petroleum Resources in his administration, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.  But Jonathan on Tuesday denied owning a foreign bank account. Bloomberg  reports that the banks from whom the Federal Government is seeking the documents include, Citigroup and JPMorgan, as well as the New York branches of Deutsche Bank AG and United Bank for Africa Plc. The Federal Government’s request was contained in an application filed at the foreign court on March 24 asking for the bank documents. The Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, is said to have asked for the bank documents in its bid to overturn the P&ID $9.6bn judgment. The $9.6bn award was issued against Nigeria and in favour of P&ID  in a January 31, 2017 ruling of a London arbitrati

Covid-19: US Climbs One Million Coronavirus Cases, Death Toll Reaches 56,000

Image
There have now been more than one million confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. More than 56,000 have died from COVID-19-related complications. The first known U.S. case of COVID-19 was reported on January 21. On April 10, there were more than 500,000 cases, the New York Times reported. Some reports said the true number of infections may be much higher. The one million figure does not include untold thousands of Americans who contracted the virus but were not tested, either because they did not show symptoms or because of a persistent national testing shortage. Some disease researchers have estimated that the true number of infections may be somewhere around 10 times the known number, and preliminary testing of how many people have antibodies to the virus seems to support that view. But as the country’s death toll, now more than 56,000, continues to grow and as the pandemic’s economic fallout continues to mount, the

Rio Ferdinand names Ndidi, Niguez as choice picks for Man Utd in summer

Image
Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has urged the club to make a transfer move for Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, or Atletico Madrid stars, Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey this summer. He also advised the Red Devils to make a move for Napoli centre-back, Kalidou Koulibaly, or Norwich City defender, Ben Godfrey. Man United has already signed Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo last January transfer window, but Ferdinand believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side still needs two to three players this summer to compete for the Premier League title next season. "I would maybe go get Partey from Atletico Madrid or Ndidi from Leicester," Ferdinand said on The Beautiful Game podcast. "I like Saul Niguez. He's a very, very good player in midfield. "And then a centre-back, they still need a centre-back. "Whether you go for a young one like Ben Godfrey or someone like Kalidou Koulibaly. "I don't know, and it is difficult."

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has awarded the sum of N5 million against the 2019 Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and his campaign director, Dr Bukola Saraki, over unauthorized use of the photograph of a Lagos-based trader, Mrs Amuda Adeleke, on their campaign billboard. Justice Ayokunle Faji, who made the monetary award in a judgment delivered on Monday, said the N5m would be jointly and severally paid by Atiku, Saraki, the PDP and Peter Obi, who was Atiku’s running mate during the election. In a fundamental rights enforcement suit brought before the court, Adeleke through her lawyer, Kingsley Iheakaram, said the defendants used her photograph on their campaign billboard without seeking her consent. Adeleke also explained that in December 2018, during the build-up to the 2019 general elections, agents of the Atiku Abubakar Organisation, led by Saraki, came to Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos to campaign and mo

China is installing surveillance cameras outside people's front doors ... and sometimes inside their homes

Image
(CNN Business) The morning after Ian Lahiffe returned to Beijing, he found a surveillance camera being mounted on the wall outside his apartment door. Its lens was pointing right at him. After a trip to southern China, the 34-year-old Irish expat and his family were starting their two-week home quarantine, a mandatory measure enforced by the Beijing government to stop the spread of the  novel coronavirus . He said he opened the door as the camera was being installed, without warning. "(Having a camera outside your door is) an incredible erosion of privacy," said Lahiffe. "It just seems to be a massive data grab. And I don't know how much of it is actually legal." A surveillance camera was installed outside Ian Lahiffe's front door the morning after he returned to Beijing. Although there is no official announcement stating that cameras must be fixed outside the homes of people under quarantine, it has been happening in some cities acr
