DeSantis declares state of emergency for much of Florida as possible tropical storm forms in Gulf of Mexico

Ron DeSantis  declared a state of emergency Saturday for much of his state, as a possible tropical storm brews in the Gulf of Mexico.  DeSantis issued an executive order with the emergency declaration for 33 counties in preparation for the storm currently known as Invest 93L, which is expected to strength noen into  a tropical storm  in the coming days.  The governor and the Florida Division of Emergency Management "are taking timely precautions to ensure Florida’s communities, infrastructure and resources are prepared, including those communities that are still recovering following Hurricane Ian," the governor's office said.  "I signed an Executive Order issuing a state of emergency out of an abundance

Biden admin launches push to expand voter registration at citizenship ceremonies

The Biden administration  on Friday rolled out new guidance to provide expanded access to voter registration during naturalization ceremonies of new U.S. citizens – part of a broader push by the federal government to increase voter registration that has raised concerns from Republicans. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it is updating its policy manual "to increase awareness and expand access to voter registration during naturalization ceremonies" at which eligible foreign nationals become U.S. citizens and are then able to vote in elections, including federal elections.  The new guidance "affirms that USCIS provides access to voter registration services at each administrative naturalization ceremony, including information regarding points-of-contact for voting and voter registration." NASCAR driver Ryan Preece was involved in a scary wreck during the  Coke Zero Sugar 400  at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night. Preece, in the No. 41 vehicle, and Chase Briscoe, in the No. 14 car, got tangled up on the backstretch and Preece got airborne. The  No. 41 car flipped about 10 times before finally coming to a stop. Joly was first elected to represent the Ahuntsic-Cartierville region of Canada in the House of Commons in 2015. Since then, she has been risen to become Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister and been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. In late 2022, a piece in Politico speculated that Joly, as a  "Trudeau protégé"  might "one day have his job."
