Leave us alone, Prophet Muhammed will help us’ – Boko Haram leader, Shekau begs Chadian soldiers

Image
The leader of Boko Haram sect, Ibrahim Shekau has reacted after his fighters suffered heavy defeat, following an ambush by Chadian troops. Shekau begged the Chadian troops to leave his fighters alone, stressing that God will help the insurgents in their fight. Recall that the Chadian President, Iddris Deby had led troops from his country in a fight against Boko Haram insurgents. Deby and his troops had last week Saturday captured Boko Haram’s arms store in Sambisa. The Chadian President was said to have led the offensive against the insurgents in retaliation over an ambush which killed over 90 soldiers. However, the Boko Haram leader in a viral audio, urged his fighters not to run despite suffering heavy casualties. Shekau lamented that the attack was not approved by the Qur’an. He said: “People of Chad, leave us alone, this operation is not approved by the Qur’an. It is not the will of the Prophet Muhammed but if you want to continue, God w

Japan Declares State Of Emergency Over Coronavirus

Image
Japan on Tuesday declared a month-long state of emergency over a spike in coronavirus cases, ramping up efforts to contain infections but stopping short of the strict lockdowns seen in other parts of the world. The government has come under mounting pressure to tackle an outbreak that remains small by global standards but has raised concerns among Japanese medical experts, with warnings that local healthcare systems are already overstretched. Announcing the measures, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe urged the Japanese people to draw on the sense of togetherness seen after the country’s devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown in 2011. “We are again facing a great difficulty. However, if we work together once again with hope, we will rise to the challenge and move forward,” he said. “We will beat the virus, we will defeat the virus and we can overcome the ordeal of this state of emergency.” The move allows governors in seven affected regions including Tokyo to ask

Philippine Authorities Go After Media

Image
The Philippine government is cracking down on journalists and social media users critical of the government’s COVID-19 response, threatening media freedom and the rights to free expression and access to information.  On March 24, President Rodrigo Duterte signed a COVID-19 law that provides the administration funding and grants broad emergency powers to address the coronavirus. A last-minute provision criminalizes the spreading of “false information” with up to 2 months in prison and a 1 million peso (US$19,600) fine. National and local authorities have used COVID-19 and existing legislation against those critical of the government’s response to the coronavirus outbreak. Last week, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) initiated legal action against 17 people for allegedly posting “false information” online , an offense that carries steep penalties. Police filed cases against two journalists , citing violations of the COVID-19 law and other laws. Police also brou

Islamic State in West Africa Province’s Factional Disputes and the Battle With Boko Haram

Image
Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), like other jihadist groups, is prone to internal leadership purges. After pledging loyalty to Abubakar al-Baghdadi and joining Islamic State (IS) in March 2015, ISWAP’s hardline leader, Abubakar Shekau, was ejected from the group in August 2016. IS then announced the more moderate Abu Musab al-Barnawi as ISWAP’s leader ( Al-Naba #41 , August 2, 2016). In March 2019, however, another relative moderate known as Ba Idrisa became ISWAP leader and al-Barnawi was demoted to shura (consultative council) member ( Vanguard , March 16, 2019). This all occurred after al-Barnawi’s main backer, Mamman Nur was purged in late 2018. Nur was a deputy of al-Barnawi’s father, Boko Haram co-founder Muhammed Yusuf ( Sahara Reporters , September 14, 2018). ISWAP never explained why Abu Musab al-Barnawi was demoted, nor did IS comment on his demotion. However, the demotion coincided with IS’ organizational restructuring in Africa. ISWAP, for exa
