Boko Haram jihadists have kidnapped a hospital’s head doctor, a nurse and their driver in western Chad, civilian and military sources said Thursday. It was the first abduction targeting medical personnel in the region, where Boko Haram has raided many villages, kidnapping mainly women, they said. The medical team was headed to the town of Tchoukouliya on the northern shore of Lake Chad, a Boko Haram stronghold, when they were snatched on Wednesday, local governor Nouki Charfadine told  AFP . “The kidnappers took them away on a motorised canoe on the lake,” Charfadine said. Boko Haram has training camps on several of the islands that dot the vast, shallow lake, which straddles the borders of Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon as well as Chad. A high-ranking military official said on condition of anonymity that the three staff from the hospital in Bagassoula, all Chadians, had not notified authorities of their itinerary. “They were intercepted by Boko Haram elements, and local p

Facebook agrees to pay fine over Cambridge Analytica

The fight between Facebook and the UK government's data regulator over Cambridge Analytica has come to an end. Facebook has agreed to pay the £500,000 ($645,000) penalty  imposed by the UK Information Commissioner's Office , which found the company failed to safeguard user data gathered by political data firm Cambridge Analytica. Facebook will not admit to any liability under the settlement. The regulator issued the small fine last year, but Facebook appealed the ruling. The ICO and  Facebook   ( FB )  announced Wednesday that a settlement has now been reached. Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg have faced intense scrutiny after Cambridge Analytica obtained the personal data of as many as 87 million Facebook users. Investigations have focused on how the data was used. I was a top executive at Cambridge Analytica. It taught me a tough lesson about public trust Facebook will also gain access under the settlement to documents obtained by the UK government fro

US Military training increases Nigeria Air Force Personnel Medical Evacuation Capabilities

Image
The U.S. Military trained Nigerian Air Force medical personnel on Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) as part of a four phased Aerial Patient Movement Program.  The rigorous two-week training, conducted at the Nigeria Air Force Base Hospital Abuja, will enable the air force to more effectively recover wounded soldiers from the battlefield. The personnel acquired lifesaving first-aid skills to be used in the field, in addition to familiarizing themselves with techniques to both properly load patients on helicopters and care for them in-flight. Nigeria Air Force helicopter pilots were also trained by U.S. instructor pilots on how to effectively plan and execute a Casualty Evacuation Mission.  The training, which is the second phase of the program, was conducted and funded by the United States Air Force and the California National Guard. These trainings are to assist in the increase of the medical capability of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.  The training provided patient evacuation tac

Amber Rudd and David Lidington among MPs to quit before election

I’m just not standing at this election.’ Photograph: Ben Stansall/AFP via Getty Images Amber Rudd  and David Lidington, respectively the ex-home secretary and Theresa May’s former de facto deputy, have both announced they are among an increasing number of sitting MPs who will quit at the coming election. The departure of Rudd, who  quit the cabinet  and gave up the Conservative whip in September over Boris Johnson’s approach to Brexit, prompted a brutal and highly public spat with senior party figures. Announcing her departure, Rudd said she hoped to rejoin the party ranks, but was brutally rebuffed by Mark Spencer, the chief whip. In response,  Rudd tweeted  that Johnson had last week asked her to stand in the election as a Tory. The departure of Lidington was notably more low key. In a letter to his local newspaper the Bucks Herald,  the Aylesbury MP wrote : “Politics imposes a heavy cost on family and private life. That is not a com

Miyetti Allah claims Benue as ancestral home, retrieves apology to Ortom

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) has said Benue State remains its ancestral home even though Governor Samuel Ortom had chased them away. The group said It would not in any way apologize to the governor, saying rather “we demand apology for sending us out of our ancestral home in  Benue State .” MACBAN spokesman Gaurus Gololo, spoke with The Nation on Monday about the apology tendered by another Fulani group called Miyetti Allah Kauta Hore, to Governor Ortom, over killings in the state by herdsmen. Gololo, a former aide to Governor Ortom on Fulani Matters, claimed that the Fulani group that tendered apology to Governor Ortom had no member in Benue state, as the group was based in Jos, Plateau State. He dismissed the apology as a smokescreen, which has no effect on the demand and position of MACBAN. Ripples Nigeria had reported that Miyetti Allah Kautal had apologized to Samuel Ortom and the entire state over the killings and pledged to ensure peaceful c

Democrats are discussing a possible impeachment vote by Christmas, sources say

Image
Brendan Smialowski / AFP The House will vote on Thursday to formalize the procedures of its  impeachment probe  into Trump. So what happens after that?  House Democrats are discussing a time frame that would include public impeachment hearings before Thanksgiving and votes on whether to impeach Trump by Christmas, according to multiple Democratic sources. However, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi did not put a time frame on it at a closed-door leadership meeting yesterday to discuss the resolution and she has been hesitant to do so, as the timing is subject to change depending on how witnesses cooperate or if additional leads come up, according to multiple Democrats. Remember, the impeachment process can take months.  Take the three presidents who have faced impeachment as examples: For  Andrew Johnson , the entire process lasted 94 days. From first congressional action to Senate acquittal, it lasted from February 22, 1868 to May 26, 1868. For  Richard Nixon , it las
