GOP calls for Fauci investigation, resignation mount after NIH admits funding gain-of-function research

Image
GOP calls for an investigation and the resignation of  Dr. Anthony Fauci  have escalated following this week’s revelation that the  National Institutes of Health  (NIH) funded  gain-of-function  research on the coronavirus.  The controversial research involves artificially engineering an animal virus in a laboratory setting to further examine how it becomes more easily transmissible and deadly to humans – a measure that Fauci told lawmakers was not utilized by the NIH. But a  letter  from the NIH to Ranking Member Rep. James Comer of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Wednesday admitted to a "limited experiment" conducted in order to test if "spike proteins from naturally occurring bat coronaviruses circulating in China were capable of binding to the human ACE2 receptor in a mouse model" – contradicting Fauci’s previous claims. The firestorm that followed renewed demands by Republicans in Congress for the resignation of the infectious disease specialist. &q

US kills senior al-Qaeda leader in Syria with drone strike

According to US Army Major John Rigsbee said in a written statement late on Friday, there were no other known casualties from the strike, he said, adding it was conducted using an MQ-9 aircraft. The strike comes two days after a US outpost in southern Syria was attacked. “Al-Qaeda continues to present a threat to America and our allies. Al-Qaeda uses Syria as a safe haven to rebuild, coordinate with external affiliates, and plan external operations,” Rigsbee said. Rigsbee did not say if the US drone strike was carried out in retaliation for the attack. He also did not say which area of Syria the strike was conducted. In September, the Pentagon also conducted a strike in rebel-controlled northwestern Syria, killing another senior al-Qaeda leader, Salim Abu-Ahmad. The earlier airstrike was conducted near the governorate of Idlib. Large parts of Idlib and neighbouring Aleppo remain in the hands of Syrian armed opposition, dominated by armed groups including the once al-Qaeda linked Hayat

Parnas, a Ukraine-born American businessman, and his former associate Igor Fruman had been accused of soliciting funds from Russian businessman Andrey Muraviev to donate to candidates in states where the group was seeking licenses to operate cannabis businesses in 2018. Advertisement Parnas also concealed that he and Fruman, who pleaded guilty in September, were the true source of a donation to a group supporting Republican then-President Trump, prosecutors said. Giuliani's attorney has said the Parnas case is separate from a probe into whether violated lobbying laws while representing Trump. Giuliani, a U.S. prosecutor in the 1980s before he was elected New York's mayor in 1994, has not been charged with any crimes and denies wrongdoing. Parnas was found guilty on all six counts of federal ele

REUTERS/Stringer An Ethiopian government air strike on the capital of the northern Tigray region on Friday forced a U.N. aid flight to abort a landing there, the United Nations said. In neighboring Amhara region, people were fleeing intensified fighting. Humanitarian sources and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which controls the area, said a university in the regional capital Mekelle was hit by the air strike. Government spokesman Legesse Tulu said a former military base occupied by TPLF fighters was targeted, and he denied the university was hit. Reuters was not able to independently confirm either account. TPLF-controlled Tigrai TV reported that 11 civilians were wounded in the air strike. It was at least the fourth day this week that Mekelle had been attacked. The United Nations suspended all flights to Mekelle after a U.N. plane with
