Nnamdi Kanu pleads not guilty, trial adjourned till November 10

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has pleaded not guilty to the amended charges against him by the Federal Government. He was today arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja over charges of treasonable felony and terrorism which the Federal Government amended last week to amount to a seven-count charge. Shortly after pleading not guilty today, the judge ordered that he remains in the custody of the Department of State Services after failing to grant his request to be transferred to a correctional centre.

IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu Many journalists who came for the event were denied access to the courtroom. The security operatives stationed at the entrance of the Ministry of Justice building told journalists that only accredited judiciary reporters would be allowed in. Ajuede , however, observed that even accredited journalists were also not yet allowed to enter the court. The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra on Thursday arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja amidst tight security. He was brought to the Court on a black Sports Utility Vehicles at about 8am, although sitting had yet to commence as of the time of this report. Journalists, lawyers and staff of the FHC were barred from entering the Court premises. From Transcorp Hilton through the Ministry of Justice and Abia House, security was beefed up with the presence of a combined team of Police, Army, Department of State Services operatives estimated to be over 3,000. The PUNCH  reported that during the last proceedings, journalists and lawyers were manhandled, while Kanu who is being held by the DSS was not brought to court, a development that was blamed on “logistical issues” by the prosecuting lawyer, Mohammed Abubakar. The Nigerian government has put forward its amended seven-count charges against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu before a Federal High Court in Abuja.  The fresh charges border on treasonable felony and terrorism following the pending charges he was facing since 2016. Amongst the charges, the Department of State Services (DSS) accused Kanu of describing President Muhammadu Buhari as “as a paedophile, a terrorist, an idiot and an embodiment of evil”.
