Democrats set December 6 deadline for White House to say if it will participate in impeachment proceedings

Image
The House Judiciary Committee is setting a deadline of December 6 for President Donald Trump to decide whether his attorneys will participate in  the committee's impeachment proceedings against him. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat,  sent Trump a letter Friday  with the new date asking if the President's counsel plans to request witnesses or make a presentation as part of the proceedings. That deadline is later than the Sunday one the White House was previously given to say whether it will participate in the committee's first impeachment hearing on Wednesday. The letter to the President and  a separate letter sent to Judiciary Committee ranking Republican Doug Collins  of Georgia were largely technical, referring to the rules established by the House's impeachment resolution last month. But the letter starts the clock for the White House to decide if it will take part in the House's impeachment proceedings -- which Trump and cong

Eyes Wide Shut review – chilling secrecy, quaintly soft-porn sex

Near the knuckle? Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman divorced two years after Eyes Wide Shut was released. Photograph: Allstar/Warner Bros E yes Wide Shut, now on rerelease, is fascinating, flawed late  Stanley Kubrick , his final film before his death in 1999 at the age of 70. It was adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle, or Dream Story, published in 1926 and originally set in Vienna. The film is a tale of sexual obsession among modern-day Manhattan’s wealthy and powerful classes and  I originally valued it for its satirical potency, formal control and dreamlike self-possession , all of which are bound up in a certain kind of deadpan absurdity and soft-porn seriousness. Tom Cruise  plays Bill Harford, a well-off New York doctor with a fashionable clientele and a magnificent apartment in Central Park West, happily married to beautiful Alice (Nicole Kidman) a former art gallery director, now a stay-at-home mum to their young daughter. (In the book, they are Jewish, an importa

Two Twitter accounts of Stella's have been suspended, her campaign confirmed to CNN. Omar has been a frequent  target of smears and attacks  by President Donald Trump and his supporters. In April, Omar said she experienced an increase in  death threats  after Trump tweeted about a speech she had given the month before.
