PFWA moves to promote body positivity in curvy women

More often than not, curvy women all over the world are labeled with absurdity. Some are even seen as unhealthy, while others are tagged “not beautiful,” forgetting the fact that women are created in diversity, different shapes and sizes but with unique beauty.
Hence, in its bid to not only promote body positivity, but also celebrate plus-size women, Plus-size Fashion Week Africa (PFWA) 2019, would this year during its third edition, explore nature and fashion at its lineup masterclasses.
PFWA, which is billed for December 8, 2019 at Traffic Lounge Polo Club Road, Ikoyi will showcase runway models of curvy women in different shapes and sizes as mixed collections of designers reveal the beauty in plus size.
Founder PFWA, Temi Aboderin-Alao, said: “PFWA is more than a fashion show, it is a movement to promote body positivity. We want people to know that plus size is not a disease and it’s time to stop dehumanising curvy women. Curvy women are actually beautiful, which is why some people who are slim figured go extra miles to become curvy. So PFWA is a celebration of plus size women. We are saying African women of various shapes and sizes can now flaunt their figure in confidence and work elegantly on the runway.
“We want curvy women to have confidence in their own skin and fashion to boost confidence. You dress well and feel good about yourself. This is why PFWA is also a platform for plus size designers to showcase their designs. These designers cater for the fashion of curvy women. The traditional fashion shows do not accommodate plus size designers, which made it difficult initially, and this is what made me decide to start PFWA.”
Aboderin-Alao, however, noted that PFWA movement is not a celebration of obesity but a celebration of beauty and confidence. “If you must be curvy, you must be healthy. Our models are trained to be the healthiest version of themselves. We want to make sure you don’t become overweight to the point where you begin to damage your health. Not everyone can be a size 6 or 8, but it is important for you to be healthy. If you are not ready to work on yourself, I can’t have you on my runway,” she enthused.
