(Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) Seven Republican Senators have written President Joe Biden to express concern over his expected police reform executive order, the Washington Examiner reported. Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and five colleagues warned that the executive order would defund state and local police departments. "These hard-left policies are extremely ill-advised, dangerous to Americans, and would only further demoralize law enforcement," the senators wrote in the letter sent to Biden on Friday, the  Examiner  reported. "We are baffled as to why this Administration would want to implement this EO, which is tantamount to defunding the police." One objection to the order concerned a ban on common equipment used by local law enforcement, the Exam

Trump Battled the Powell Fed's Rate Hikes, Biden's Betting on Them

(Yuri Gripas/Abaca/Sipa USA via AP Images) U.S. central bankers on Tuesday will open their first meeting of the year already in broad agreement that they need to raise interest rates soon, likely in March, to slow the economy. They are likely not to hear a peep about it from the White House. The silence marks a sharp reversal for the Federal Reserve and its chair, Jerome Powell. His four interest rate hikes in 2018 drew blistering criticism from President Donald Trump, who had just installed Powell atop the Fed and felt they undercut Trump's own efforts to bolster economic growth. Trump waged a public pressure campaign to stop them. President Joe Biden by contrast has endorsed what the Fed has signaled will be at least three interest rate hikes this year and a rapid shrinking of its nearly

Ron DeSantis, who was a distant second at 12% in the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll provided exclusively to  The Hill. In a hypothetical eight-Republican field, Trump is in a "strong position" long before he makes his post-2022 midterms intentions official, according to the pollster. "It's way too early to make predictions about 2024 as early polls usually end up not being a good predictor of what happens," Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll, told The Hill. "Trump is starting out in a fairly strong position with Republicans, while Biden and Harris have surprisingly little support among Democrats for incumbents.

Seoul Says it Paid Iran's Delinquent UN Dues to Restore Vote

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi (AP) Using Iranian bank funds freed from American sanctions, South Korea has paid Iran's $18 million in delinquent dues owed to the United Nations, Seoul said Sunday. The step was apparently approved by Washington to restore Tehran's suspended voting rights at the world body. The South Korean Foreign Ministry said Seoul had paid the sum using Iranian assets frozen in the country after consulting with the United States Treasury — a potential signal of flexibility amid floundering nuclear negotiations. The ministry said it expected Iran’s voting rights to be restored immediately after their suspension earlier this month for delinquent dues. Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Iran state television’s English-language arm Press TV quoted Iran’s permanent representative to the U.N. as confirming that the dues had been paid and Iran's voting rights would soon be restored. He did not specify

Texas Deputy Murdered During Traffic Stop

(AP) A police officer died Sunday after a driver fired multiple shots at him during an early morning traffic stop and then took off, authorities in Texas said. Harris County Precinct 5 Constable Ted Heap identified the fallen deputy as Cpl. Charles Galloway, 47, at a news conference. Houston police will handle the investigation. Police Chief Troy Finner said witnesses saw a man get out of his vehicle and fire multiple shots at the deputy, then drive off. “This is senseless. It makes no sense whatsoever,” Finner said. Heap added that Galloway had no time to respond or defend himself. The suspect was not in custody. To the gunman, Finner said: “The best thing you can do is turn yourself in.” Galloway had been with the constable's office for about 12 and a half years, Heap said. The deputy mentored and trained numerous younger officers, who Heap said were “broken up” over the death. “He was the one who was sitting in the front seat with them. He was the one that was teaching them what
