Nature Call: Ojukwu Bunker to be Refurbished

The Abia State Government has announced plans to reconstruct and preserve the famous Ojukwu Bunker, located in Afara, Umuahia, Abia State.

Built in 1967 during the Biafra War, the bunker served as the underground command base of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, leader of Biafra.
It was designed to protect key officials and serve as a secure communication and strategy center during heavy bombardments.
The underground structure includes:

A war room

Communication tunnels

Emergency escape routes

Storage sections used during the conflict

The bunker became a symbol of resistance, survival, and strategic planning throughout the civil war. Today, it stands as one of the most important historical sites from that era.

The reconstruction project aims to preserve this heritage, enhance tourism, and ensure that future generations understand the history behind the site.
