Corruption: Maxwell Okpara Reveals Why Kanu Dismissed his Lawyers

The information that trended around September 2025 following the proposed attempt of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's defence of himself in the Abuja High Court was that Onye Ndu "sacked" his Lawyers. Many believed this story; but it was as fake as the judge that passes judgement with the Bible order than the Law.

In the interaction with the Arise TV, yesterday 21st November, 2025, barrister Maxwell Okpara, one of the defence councils of Nnamdi Kanu clarified matters concerning the rush-announced sack or dismissal.

According to Barr. Maxwell Okpara, Nnamdi Kanu has always asked the defence team deeper questions that kept them helpless. Not that they did not know the answers, but because the questions were weightier that a lawyer could directly answer without implicating his own self or his profession.


Nnamdi Kanu has always questioned the legal backing for his trial. This and other questions had held the defence team speechless. They know that no court in Nigeria has the Jurisdiction to try Nnamdi Kanu.

While this illegal trial continued and with justice James Omotosho keeping blind eyes to those relevant questions which must be answered before judgement, the defence team continued to hide behind diminuendo. For example, Kanu had asked, "Why is the law always turned upside down when it comes to my case?" Such questions as this are rhetorical for the lawyers to answer.

While this mute and jaundice situation continued to prevail, he suggested that it may be better he takes the defence himself so he could further demand explanations and clarifications to those unaddressed questions. In the words of Barrister Maxwell Okpara, "The defence team chose to withdraw..."

Yet, with those six conditions not addressed, Omotosho went ahead to read the judgement already prepared for him by the federal government. It is pathetic, unlawful and nonjudicial. But, it all happened because he was an Nnamdi, not Kunle or Haruna.

Because Omotosho did not have any legal packing for his adjudication, to pass judgement, he chose to bastardise the Holy Scripture. Could he do so to quoran and have his head still on his shoulders? Of course not!
