Summary of the Novel, The Clock

The book “the Clock” is a timely book which speaks wholly about being time conscious in every aspect of life. The writer, Ngozi Chima in good instances made illustrations of how people use time without purpose and in turn this led to their various detriments.

The setting of the book circles around Igbo community, a town named ‘Akamu’ as used in the book by the writer herself. She made use of other resources in order to depict such environment and this includes names, title, ceremonies and so on, these all circles around the environment of Igbo land.

In this book, the main character is named ‘Mama Nwankwo’. She is a virtuous woman who is known for storytelling, most of her stories reside around moral development and feminism. People return from their farms and businesses hurriedly every day including Efe evenings (Efe is a day set aside for every worker and salesperson to take a rest). Mama does this to every young and persons in Akamu village.

Mama Nwankwo is known for her generosity in the entire village and this paved path for her especially when she was admitted at the hospital where she met her junior school mate who she helped back then. Dr. Nkechi and Nkiru are the two of her juniors back then who later became medical doctors and also assisted her with the bills and other treatments. The help they rendered to her did not just stop in the hospital but they also took the project of developing Akamu village upon themselves in which Akamu village later became a local government and all the roads were tarred.

When mama was still in the hospital, she had a discussion with doctor Nkechi and after mama returned to the village, she stood on her feet before all the villagers, she declared a movement of feminism, where every woman will be given equal right as the men of the Akamu local government. As a result of this, mama was made the chief leader of the five finger friends (FFF). A luxurious life which includes duplex house, a car and other valuables were being awarded her.

Thematically, the whole story in this book is woven around many familiar human issues which include ambition, determination, hard work, disappointment, regrets and so on. However, procrastination is one of the biggest item portrayed in the book, she explained using good instances that time waits for no one.

In the use of contrast the writer showed out the difference between dreaming big and working towards making the dream a reality.
Personally, while I was reading the book, a quote I ever wrote times back which talks about dream and hard work came back to me.

I implore you to get a copy of this book, either soft of copy or hard copy. I have both of such copies, so you can reach me privately if interested.
