California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder said he wanted to fix school in the Golden State by giving parents the right of choice in education. During a speech in San Diego on Monday, Elder slammed the state’s public education system and highlighted how children have been failing state standardized tests.

“Two percent of the kids at Crenshaw High School are math proficient,” he explained. “Now, who sends their kid to a school where only two percent of the kids are math proficient if they have an option out? I want to give parents choice in education.”

Elder also hit at Democrat policies, which he argued made affordable housing near impossible as well as contributed to the rise in homelessness.

“Many of them have mental illness. Many of them have substance abuse. They need to be treated. They need to be cared for, but we need to build low cost housing so they have somewhere to go,” he asserted. “We cannot tolerate what’s going on, having people pitching tents and sleeping on sidewalks. That’s not going to be tolerated.”

This comes as new data has shown Elder has been leading the field of Republicans in the recall election and averaging nearly $250,000 in daily donations.
