Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) has resigned as governor of New York in wake of the state’s investigation into sexual harassment claims. Cuomo made the announcement in a press briefing on Tuesday.

The Democrat went on to say, “the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing.”

Cuomo claimed the independent probe, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, was politically motivated.

“When there is a bias or a lack of fairness in the justice system, it is a concern for everyone, not just those immediately effected,” he stated. “The most serious allegations made against me had no credible factual basis  in the report.”

His official resignation will take effect in 14 days, with Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) stepping up to replace him. She will be the first female governor of New York.
