Trump threatens tariffs on countries that impose taxes on US tech firms
President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose tariffs on any countries that impose tax on U.S. tech firms.
“Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies,” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social. “Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this. Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America.”
Earlier this month, Trump threatened to impose a 100% tax on French wines if France refused to drop its tax on U.S. tech firms, according to The Hill newspaper.
“This TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not,” Trump’s post continued. “Additionally, the 100% TARIFF will be immediately imposed, if they proceed. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
During trade negotiations with the U.S. last year, Canada halted its digital services tax.
In March, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Trump exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The 1977 law on presidential regulation of international commerce allows the president to impose tariffs.
