Israeli natural gas field in the Mediterranean (photo credit: MARC ISRAEL SELLEM/THE JERUSALEM POST) A combined  Iranian  and Hezbollah attack on Haifa Bay, including strikes against civilian shipping near the natural harbor or gas rigs in the Mediterranean, is among several key threats Israel must now prepare for, according to a new assessment published by the Alma Research and Education Center last week. With a demonstrated willingness to target key maritime assets using ballistic  missiles , drones, cruise missiles, anti-ship munitions, explosive boats, and potentially underwater threats and commando capabilities, the center warned that the threat must be taken seriously, even though Israel has proven defensive capabilities against each individual threat.

The strike killed Colonel Wael El-Ledawi, head of the service in central Gaza, and Major Ramez Abu Zraiq, medics and the Hamas-run interior ministry said. The Israeli military said it had carried out a strike against a Hamas militant, without further details.

"Iran’s position remains ‘attack for attack’: if the attacks stop,  Iran  will also halt its operations. That message has already been conveyed to the United States," the source told  Reuters , a day after Washington halted attacks following 13 successive nights of air strikes. "There is more skepticism than optimism about the halt in attacks. The prevailing view is that the pause is tactical rather than genuine," the source added.

The move made ITA Airways,  Italy ’s national carrier, the first airline to announce cancellations following the latest escalation with Iran. In an official statement, the airline said flights to and from Tel Aviv were being  canceled  for "operational reasons." It did not specify whether the cancellations resulted from new security directives, changes to flight-route planning, crew considerations, or its internal assessment of regional developments.

According to the officials, recent White House discussions have centered on the depletion of the US's interceptor missiles, particularly since three US soldiers were  killed in Jordan  after an Iranian missile got through American air defenses. US General Dan Caine has said, according the the  NYT 's sources, that a return to full-fledged war with Iran was doable, but would severely reduce the amount of missiles available to US Central Command ( CENTCOM ) in the Middle East.
