Then major points in Nigerian news for today, Thursday

1. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday night, announced 593 confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total in the country to 50,488.
The new cases were reported from 16 states: 1Plateau (186), Lagos (172), FCT (62), Oyo (27), Delta (25), Rivers (20), Ondo (19), Edo (18), Kaduna (17), Enugu (12), Akwa Ibom (10), Ogun (7), Abia (6), Gombe (6), Kano (3) and Osun (3).
2. The Presidency has taken a swipe on Nigerians criticising the invitation of former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Deputy Governor, Obadiah Mailafia by the Department of State Services, DSS over his recent comments on Boko Haram.
Garba Shehu, the President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said the DSS took the right decision, insisting that this was not the first time the secret police was inviting people for questioning, adding that Nigeria is not Mali.
3. The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State to appear before it over allegations of bias levelled against him in setting up a probe panel on the incessant communal clashes between the Tiv and Jukun tribes in the state.
Also summoned by the court are the four service chiefs of the country and heads of other security agencies, among others.
4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigation into various corruption allegations against the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio and the acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC’s Interim Management Committee, IMC, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei.
A letter addressed to a civil society group, Foundation for True Freedom and Good Governance, led by activist, Deji Adeyanju gave an indication of the probe.
5. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi has reacted to the fire outbreak in his palace on Wednesday.
According to him, there is no need for panic, assuring that the fire incident was a minor one, that slightly razed a tiny part of one of the administrative buildings within the palace compound.
6. United Nations Security Council on Wednesday ordered Malian mutineers to immediately release detained officials, including the country’s president, and “return to their barracks without delay.”
The 15 members also “underlined the urgent need to restore rule of law and to move towards the return to constitutional order,” according to a Council statement.
7. Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has distanced himself fom his 2023 presidential campaign posters which went viral on social media on Wednesday.
Gov. Fayemi, in a statement made available by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, warned those behind the posters to stop distracting him from performing his primary duties.
8. The Chief Magistrate in the Lagos State Ministry of Justice Abimbola Aoko-Komolafe has passed on aged 51.
Mrs Aoko-Komolafe is believed to have died early Monday.
9. The Amir (President) of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, Miftahudeen Thanni has expressed concern over the continued killings in Southern Kaduna and called for an immediate end to the “acts of cruelty.”
Thanni who recently took over as the President of the society, called on the government to check whoever is perpetrating the evil going on in Southern Kaduna and put an end to it.
10. Mamman Daura, a nephew to President Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly been flown to the United Kingdom for urgent medical treatment.
The 79-year-old top confidant of the president was said to have been taken the UK on a private jet on Wednesday, after experiencing respiratory difficulties with COVID-19 related symptoms since last Friday.
