Italy Gave Condition for Recognizing Palestinian State
Italian representatives gave an unachievable condition before they could recognize a Palestinian State. Italy said they could recognize a Palestinian state only on the condition that all Israeli hostages are released and Hamas is excluded from any government role, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday.
"I am not against the recognition of Palestine, but we should set ourselves the right priorities," Meloni told reporters, announcing her government would present a motion to parliament on the issue.
Speaking from New York, where she flew for the United Nations General Assembly, Meloni said international pressure should be on Hamas rather than Israel, because it started the war and is blocking its end by refusing to hand over hostages.
Meloni leads a right-wing government that has been one of Israel's strongest allies in the European Union and has refused to follow other G7 nations like Britain, Canada, and France in recognizing Palestinian statehood this month.
"A genocide is continuing in Gaza, even as we meet here, innocent people are dying," Erdogan said in a speech to the UNGA, adding that the "genocide crew" must be held accountable.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump rejected moves by allies to endorse a Palestinian state amid Israel's latest Gaza offensive.
"The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists, for their atrocities," he said, repeating his call for the return of hostages taken by the terrorist group.
