FALCONS NEED OVERHAUL, SAYS IKHANA
Former Super Falcons coach, Kadiri
Ikhana, has called for the overhauling of the current women’s national team,
stating that most of the players were too old.
Ikhana, who spoke after Falcons 1-0 defeat to hosts France
on Monday, urged the Nigeria Football Federation to act fast in developing new
players to replace the tired players.
Ikhana, who managed the Falcons briefly in 2012, praised the
resilience of the team, noting that they made the country proud by not
conceding more against the hosts.
He said, “When you see the bunch of players we took to this
World Cup, I think most of them are out of the game in the sense that age is no
more on their side. The experience is there but their age has become a problem.
“You could see that they could not cope with the pace of the
French team because of their youthfulness. So, I think the earlier we let them
go, the better. We should begin to arrange for new set of players now.
“I think the team need to be overhauled. Most of them have
been playing for over 10 years, so it’s not going to be easy for them.”
The CAF Champions League winning coach also faulted Falcons
coach, Thomas Dennerby, for failing not to apply a tactical approach against
the French.
“I also don’t believe that the team was well built
tactically. I don’t think they understood the strength of their opponents. I
believe that tactically, they did not prepare well.
“Focusing on our last match, defensively, we were okay but
drafting our strikers (AsisatOshoala and Francisca Ordega) too deep, left them
without much energy to go forward,” he said.
