Sen. Cruz: Schumer will shut govt down ahead of midterms

Senator Ted Cruz says Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will shut the government down ahead of this year’s midterms.
While speaking to CNBC on Tuesday, Cruz (R-Texas) said Schumer (D-N.Y.) is not hard to predict. He noted that he will likely force another shutdown when funding for the federal government expires on September 30th.
The Texas congressman also accused Schumer of pulling a similar stunt last year, when the government shutdown for 43 days.
Cruz went on to bet $100 on his prediction and claimed Democrats could use another shutdown to strengthen their messaging.
“I will wager $100 that Schumer intends on Oct. 1 to do the same thing, to shut the whole federal government down,” Cruz said.
“So the Democrats can say, ‘See, the Republicans are in charge. They don’t know what they’re doing.’ This is a political stunt that’s coming,” he continued.
Cruz went on to call on his colleagues to include The Prevent Government Shutdown Act in a reconciliation bill.
The legislation would automatically trigger a continuing resolution if Congress fails to pass appropriations bills before the beginning of a fiscal year.
